Château Léoville-Poyferré 2005
Château Léoville Poyferré is a wine estate in St Julien on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. The estate has been owned and run since 1920 by the Cuvelier family. Having established themselves as wine merchants in Lille in Northern France, the family had recently bought Château Le Crock in St Estèphe before expanding into St Julien with both Léoville Poyferré and Château Moulin Riche.
Grape Varietals: 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot
Wine Region: Saint Julien, Bordeaux, France
Tasting Notes: The voluminous fruit of the vintage really complements Poyferré's style. This is all black cherries and raspberries with hints of cedar, but at an intensity never seen before in this wine. Like so many of the top châteaux in 2005 this starts in quite a restrained manner but then grows and grows until the flavours seem to explode in your mouth. And as for the finish, well, that just goes on and on. The breed and elegance here is amazing.
Food Pairing: Beef stew
